in Residence
Bottomley’s work is in the Modern British
tradition, working alla prima in oils in front
of his subject. First and foremost a Colourist,
he delights in the natural, exotic colour of
flowers and fruit, highlighted in direct sunlight.
His painting is an emotive, intuitive response
to the structural forms and patterns of his
motif, arranged and enhanced for strongest pictorial
effect. He is concerned with a freshness and
energy of approach; capturing fleeting light
and shadows to produce works of vibrant colour
harmonies, often in series of subjects or themes.
Still
Life
The series of fruit in bowls on circular tables
provide a repetition of forms echoing each other,
circles within circles which create a certain
energy and unity to the works. The series of
flower pieces in jugs and vases, similarly,
are repeat patterns of flower heads placed in
diametrically opposing planes, emanating out
from a static central position like a clock
dial, creating energy and rhythm.
Landscape
He is drawn to landscapes in which he can imbue
a heightened sense of spirit of place, often
depicting them in series through changing seasons
of dramatic light and atmospheric effects. In
the recent flower pieces he has contrived to
combine both still life and landscape
painting. The ever present Hilly Fields forming
the backdrop to most of his work, spilling in
as it does through his studio windows.
Abstract
The series of abstract paintings are derived
from the study of Hilly Field landscapes, capturing
the experience of observation and fleeting weather
effects into a gestural expression of movement
and rhythm utilising local colour.
